Paralegal Section to Host Annual Day of Education

Governor Rick Snyder has issued a proclamation declaring Friday, May 6, Paralegal and Legal Assistant Day in Michigan to recognize the remarkable contributions paralegals and legal assistants have made in the justice system of the state. Former Governor John Engler first established Paralegal and Legal Assistant Day in 2000.

The State Bar of Michigan Paralegal/Legal Assistant Section and Great Lakes Paralegal Association will celebrate the day by presenting the 2016 Day of Education from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 6, at Western Michigan University Cooley Law School, located at 300 S. Capitol Ave., in Lansing.

The Day of Education will feature the dedication of a tree planted at the SBM Michael Franck Building in Lansing to commemorate the section’s 25th anniversary. SBM Vice President Don Rockwell will lead the dedication ceremony at 11:30 a.m. The rest of the day will feature seminars on such topics as “Exempt v. Non-Exempt: Government’s Recent Crackdown on Misclassifications,” “Immigration Basics,” “Social Media for Paralegals,” and “Technology Update Panel Discussion.”

The Day of Education will be preceded by “Let’s Go out to the Ball Game,” a casual networking event during a Lansing Lugnuts baseball game starting at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, May 5. Tickets to the ball game cost $11. Attendees can book a room at the Marriott Courtyard Lansing Hotel for $114 prior to April 21. There will be a shuttle running from the hotel to the baseball game on Thursday evening. Attendees can use the shuttle by paying $5 the evening of the ball game.

The cost to attend the day of education is $60 for SBM Paralegal/Legal Assistant Section members, $75 for non-members, and $45 for students, if registered before May 2.
