Making Your Case: Investigation and Prosecution of Animal Cruelty Crimes

Date: October 9, 2014
Time: 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Location: Western Michigan University Cooley Law School, 9th Floor Conference Room, 300 S. Capitol Ave., Lansing,
Registration: online by October 2, 2014

Animal cruelty cases can present unique problems for prosecutors and law enforcement. This conference will cover important tools in investigating, charging and prosecuting animal cruelty and fighting cases; and a discussion on the link between animal cruelty and human violence - with a focus on family violence and juvenile crime.

The conference will examine Michigan’s laws on animal cruelty. The importance of expert witnesses, forensic evidence and the problems of prosecuting large volume animal cases will be discussed, as well as sentencing considerations.

Attendees will learn how to start an Animal Protection Unit (APU), finding cases, available resources in prosecuting these cases; as well as the challenges of a special unit, including budgetary considerations.

(Handout materials will be provided)
