Dealing With the Press in a 24X7 News Cycle

Guest speakers, Charlie Langton, legal analyst for WWJ News radio 950 and Fox 2 and Bob Berg, a partner with Berg Muirhead and Associates and former United Press International reporter and bureau chief, will discuss the role of the media in the world of entertainment and sports. Among the issues discussed will be working with the media to showcase the work of a client, dealing with the media in times of crisis, and using the media to rebuild a client's image.

Charlie Langton, a practicing attorney for nearly 25 years, has won four Emmys and three Wade McCree Jr. awards for excellence in legal journalism presented by the State Bar of Michigan. Mr. Langton was a theater major at Kalamazoo College before graduating from the Detroit College of Law. During his career as a journalist, he has had the opportunity to get one-on-one interviews with people like Rosa Parks, Johnnie Cochran, and Charlton Heston. Honored by the Macomb County Bar Association for outstanding service, Mr. Langton has been asked to speak at various legal and charitable events, as well as moderate numerous political debates.

Bob Berg, prior to his legal career, began his career as a reporter for United Press International in Des Moines, Iowa, before becoming bureau chief in Lincoln, Nebraska, and Lansing, Michigan. He later became Michigan Capitol bureau chief for Panax Newspapers. In 1977, he began a 17-year tenure as senior public affairs advisor to Michigan's two longest serving chief executives—first as executive assistant for public affairs to Michigan Governor William G. Milliken from 1977 through 1982 and then as press secretary for Detroit Mayor Coleman A. Young from 1983 through 1993.

The program will be moderated by incoming ACES Chair Todd Redden of Legal Pathworks, the panel will also discuss what do "off the record" and the role social media plays as a rapidly changing press and media outlet.
