After a cold and damp spring, summer is upon us. Looking back over the last six months from both a local and a global perspective, two thoughts emerge. Notwithstanding record rains, if one considers the catastrophic natural disasters that have occurred in other parts of the U.S. and throughout the world, one feels quite fortunate to live in our great state, thank you. Consider also the violent upheavals in the Middle East that have occurred over the last six months as multiple countries struggle to end decades of dictatorship and government repression. How privileged we are to live in a democratic and free state. I have spoken this year about the work our Ad Hoc Committee on the BLS Bylaws has done. I am pleased to announce that the final draft of the revised bylaws was distributed to the Business Law Section Council in May and approved for submission to the State Bar and ultimately for approval by the Section members in September. Assuming the Bylaws are approved as revised, they will, among other things, help strengthen governance of the Section by changing the order of succession for the officers and clarifying the procedures for appointment of our committee chairs and directors. A copy of the revised draft will be published in a future edition of this e-Newsletter. One of the initiatives I put forth this year was to encourage our members to think about how the climate for businesses can be improved in Michigan. For those interested in this topic, it's one of the items on the agenda at a forthcoming meeting sponsored by the BLS Small Business Forum to be held on July 13. Further details are available on the Section's calendar page. I encourage you to attend. Getting Involved Although you may not be thinking about getting involved in more activities during the summer months, now is a good time to consider whether you can become more active in the Business Law Section this fall. We need committee members and contributors to our publications and committee activities. Please click on the link to our Get Involved on the left side of this page and send us an e-mail with your interest. We look forward to hearing from you. |
