As the recently elected Chair of the Business Law Section, I am pleased to welcome you to a new year. With over 3,300 active members, our Section is the second largest elective section of the State Bar of Michigan. It is a privilege to lead a section that has served business lawyers statewide for over 45 years.
Immediate Past Chair Edwin Lukas
I would like to recognize the significant contributions of our immediate past chair, Edwin Lukas. Ed devoted countless hours to our Section. Under his leadership, the Section, with a heavy assist from Diane Akers, provided meaningful input on pending business court legislation (now awaiting signature by the Governor). He also established an Ad Hoc Diversity Committee and created a Public Relations and Social Media Directorship. On behalf of the Section, I thank Ed for his excellent service.
Schulman Award Recipient Jeffrey S. Ammon
The highlight of the Section’s Annual Meeting on September 20 was the presentation of the Steven H.Schulman Outstanding Business Lawyer Award to Jeffrey S. Ammon, a member of Miller Johnson in Grand Rapids. The Schulman Award is the Section’s highest honor for Michigan business lawyers who exemplify the highest quality of professionalism, the highest quality of practice, and an unwavering dedication to service, ethical conduct, and collegiality within the practice of law. Jeff is listed in the Best Lawyers in America for banking law, closely held companies and family business law, construction law, land use and zoning law, mergers and acquisitions law, and real estate law. In addition to being listed as a Michigan “Super Lawyer,” he consistently has been listed on its Top 100 list of Michigan lawyers. Jeff is also a past chair of the Section and is a frequent speaker at the Business Law Institute and Business Boot Camp. Congratulations, Jeff, on a well-deserved honor.
Opportunities to Get Involved
Getting involved in the Section is easy! By clicking on the “Get Involved” link on the left column, you can sign up to become a member of the Section’s committees, assist with the Section’s directorships, or express your interest in writing for the Michigan Business Law Journal or the e-newsletter. We are seeking members to write short paragraphs on legislative, case law, and other newsworthy developments for this monthly e-newsletter. Please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org or our Vice Chair, Jeff Van Winkle, at email@example.com, if you are interested in working on the e-Newsletter.
The Section also sponsors a variety of forums, seminars, and programs that provide continuing legal education to our members and the chance to exchange ideas with other business lawyers with varied practices. The Section’s governing Council meets quarterly. The next Council meeting will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2012, at the offices of Bodman in Detroit. I am looking forward to an exciting year, and hope to see you at one or more of our events this year.
