Notes from the
Debtor/Creditor Rights Committee

The Debtor/Creditor Rights Committee co-sponsored the October 9, 2006 seminar entitled BAPCPA:  One Year Later/A Columbus Day Seminar, at the Sheraton Novi Hotel.  The seminar was a success.  Over 360 paid and/or attended.  The speakers included nine sitting bankruptcy judges, attorneys and accountants.  Congressman John Conyers, Jr. (Ranking Minority Member) of the Judiciary Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, after an introduction by Retired U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Ray Reynolds Graves, was the luncheon speaker. Expect another seminar next year, which will likely focus predominately on consumer bankruptcy issues.

If you did not attend but want a set of the seminar materials (which were over 575 pages long!), they can be obtained for $25.00, by contacting Judy B. Calton, email: jcalton@honigman.com.

The Debtor/Creditor Rights Committee met over Chinese food on January 10, 2007 at the Southfield offices of Jaffe Raitt.  Twenty-two members heard Jessica Allmand and Elias “Lee” Majoros speak on litigation to avoid refinancing mortgages, including the December 10, 2006 hearings before all of the bankruptcy judges.

David Ruskin spoke about the Chapter 13 trustees’ project to install wireless internet access for the Chapter 13 trustees at the Eastern District of Michigan bankruptcy court and their willingness to allow the Committee to work with them to expand the project to include the entire bankruptcy bar.  David Lerner and Willard Hawley agreed to work with the Chapter 13 trustees on the project.

The Committee agreed to provide the articles for the March 2008 edition of the Michigan Business Law Journal (articles due November 30, 2007) if the Business Law Council so requests at its March 2007 meeting.  In that event, Thomas Morris agreed to be responsible for the articles.  If so, we will be looking for volunteer authors and editors.

The next meeting of the Committee is expected to be in early May, 2007.  Please look for announcements.
