Meeting Minutes

April 23, 2001 in Lansing, MI

Present
Fabrizio, Allen, Cook, Kandler, Forczak, Butts, Vandervort, New, Ridella, Visconti, Ladd, Pilette, Bakker
The meeting was called to order. J. Pilette gave an oral report as to the March Minutes. These were adopted.

The Council voted to publish an increase in the Section Dues and to publish this for a vote at the Annual Meeting. The Section Secretary will contact the Bar Journal. The dues will be raised from 25 to 35 dollars.

Don Duquette from U of M came to speak to the Council on the issue of certification of children's attorneys as experts. He would like a resolution from us to participate in a piolet program with the NACC for a national certification of Children's counsel. He would like us to then participate in the training process. It was decided that J. Ridella and F. Vandervort would work with Don and bring a proposal to the Council. Lobbyist B. Kandler reported that the MI Legislature is looking for "something to do" regarding children. Charlotte Allen will pull together a list of 2 to 3 proposals that we feel are important and those will be circulated to Council members. Ladd and Ridella will work on the Ombudsman proposals. The CASA legislation (SB 370) has also gone to the Judiciary Committee in the Legislature. The Family Law section has already weighed in on this (per a letter by Lisa Sullivan). Bill Ladd will draft a letter and send it out for the Section. J. Pilette will track down the proposed Juvenile Court Rules and will try to get us on the committee.

Liaison Reports—There was no report from Criminal. The Family Law Section asked for an amicus (Hertzel) which, after discussion, was declined. F. Vandervort asked for support for an amicus in In Re AMB (B. Ladd's Bittenbender case). This was approved (Visconti, Bakker, Pilette and Ladd abstaining). There will be a special phone conference in May to discuss this issue.

The Conference was a huge success. R. Visconti is to be congratulated!

The meeting was concluded.
