Meeting Minutes

October 2001
At the CLS Council meeting last evening, the Council voted to join the Michigan Collaborative on Juvenile Justice. Here is the Michigan Collaborative on Juvenile Justice's 10-point plan for crime control:
- Early and quality pre/peri-natal health care for all expectant mothers in Michigan (including substance abuse treatment).
- Training and education in parenting techniques and child discipline for expectant and new parents.
- Quality pre-school and licensed daycare for all Michigan children.
- Programmatic support for parents experiencing early behavioral problems with their children.
- Violence prevention and conflict resolution within the core curriculum adopted by Michigan's schools.
- Comprehensive student assistance programs in all Michigan schools to prevent failure and school dropout.
- Substantive legislation to provide alternative education for children who cannot succeed in a typical classroom.
- Vocational and employment development training for every juvenile offender.
- Family counseling and support for parents and children experience domestic violence, or abuse/neglect or encounters with the juvenile justice system.
- Early intervention and rehabilitation providing: accountability, community protection, competency training and development, and a continuum of graduated sanctions from community-based to intermediate to secure settings.
