Proposed
New Ethics Rules Forwarded to the Supreme Court
The
State Bar has presented to the Michigan Supreme Court the Representative
Assembly's proposal to update and improve the Michigan Rules of Professional
Conduct. The proposals are the result of considerable study and debate
on both the national and state levels, and set forth the first major re-write
of attorney ethics rules in over 15 years. The Representative Assembly
also recommended for the sake of consistency that the Michigan Supreme
Court consider Standards for Lawyer Sanctions and the ethics rules concurrently,
so that the two can be debated, adopted, and implemented contemporaneously.
The Supreme Court has now postponed consideration of the Standards for
Lawyer Sanctions by removing the item from its January administrative
public hearing agenda.
