Be a Presenter in Your Area For a Senior Education Program

The State Bar of Michigan Standing Committee on the Unauthorized Practice of Law is once again partnering with the Elder Law & Disability Rights and Probate & Estate Planning Sections to give a short presentation, "Who Should You Trust: Avoiding Estate Planning Mistakes" to seniors at senior centers throughout Michigan on Wednesday, August 6, 2014, at the target times of Noon and 6:30 p.m. State Bar staff is working with each host center to adjust the presentation times to suit their programming needs. This free seminar presentation will take about one hour, with a 30 minute period reserved for questions.

A UPL subcommittee, which includes appointed liaisons from both sections, is actively engaged in planning this program. The seminar was presented in August 2012 at 28 senior centers in nine counties. Since it was so well received, the State Bar, based on the recommendation of the subcommittee, has committed to do the presentation again on a broader scale this year.

We invite section members to participate as presenters. By so doing, you will be sharing general information about estate planning and probate and warning seniors about the sales approach used by some persons in the business of selling insurance products, e.g. annuities, as the most desirable product to avoid probate irrespective of their particular needs. State Bar staff will match presenters with hosting centers near them.

Presenters will be provided with a PowerPoint presentation, along with talking points, to ensure consistency in the communication to seniors. Presenters will be expected to review the PowerPoint and associated talking points and seek guidance from designated group leaders with any questions or concerns. In addition, specially designed folders with general information will be available for distribution to attending seniors. Sections members across the state are encouraged to support this worthwhile program by volunteering to be a presenter. This is an excellent opportunity to give back to our community and help protect our vulnerable seniors.

Please volunteer by sending an e-mail to
Danon Goodrum-Garland,, State Bar staff counsel, phone (517) 346-6333.
