The Environmental Law Section and the Hazardous Substances & Brownfields Committee of the Environmental Law Section will welcome noted environmental attorney, litigator, author, and speaker Charles M. Denton for a noontime presentation. Environmental litigation complexities in pre-trial proceedings, ADR, expert opinions, dispositive motion practice, and trial stages can interfere with effective resolution of the dispute; this program will discuss how to recognize these challenges and simplify them for effective environmental litigation advocacy.

Calendar of Council Meetings

All section members are welcome to attend. Please notify Brian Figot at brian@attorneywordsmith.com if you are not on the council and plan to attend so he can confirm we have adequate space and refreshment.

June 21, 2013—6:00 p.m., Lansing, in conjunction with ELS Summer Conference (location to be confirmed later)

August—if our annual summer conference does not occur on the June date and instead occurs in August as it did in 2012, the Council may meet that day, as well.

September 19, 2013—1:30–6:00 p.m. annual Fall Conference and Council Meeting in Lansing during the SBM Annual Meeting.

Environmental Law Writing Contest

Three prizes will be awarded: $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second place, and $500 for third place. Winning essays will be published in the Michigan Environmental Law Journal. Entries must be postmarked by June 30, 2013.

Last Year's Winners
Eight law students from six different law schools submitted essays for the 2012 writing competition. The editors selected the following winners:

First Place: Katherine Hoeksema of Canton, Michigan, Vermont Law School, Fracking the Mitten and the Public Trust

Second Place: Brian Huttenburg of Madison, Wisconsin, University of Wisconsin Law School, Citizen Enforcement of MS4 Permits as a Tool to Address Inadequate Stormwater Runoff Regulation

Third Place: Ryan Schutte of Detroit, pictured with Anna Maiuri, Wayne State University Law School, The Great Lakes Compact: Assessing Conflict in the Cooperation Age
