    Our Speakers

    Michael C. Naughton is a Michigan lawyer who focuses on complex technological issues in civil and criminal defense litigation who joined O’Reilly, Rancilio PC as an of counsel attorney in 2012. He has sophisticated knowledge of various forms of electronic communications, computer networking, and desktop operating systems. Michael has worked on many high-profile cases involving politicians, defendants in white-collar crimes, and others accused of crimes. He has been appointed by the federal Eastern District Court of Michigan to handle technological issues involving the defense of Kwame Kilpatrick, former mayor of the City of Detroit. He was featured in Canadian Lawyer, a national legal magazine for attorneys practicing in Canada. Additionally, he recently successfully petitioned the United States Supreme Court for a Writ of Certiorari in United States v. Nagi.

    Michael was a speaker at the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan annual conference on technology and the law and was a speaker in Yoshkar Ola, Russia, on the topic of human rights views between Russian and American law students.

    Michael has a proven track record in both state and federal courts of arming clients with the necessary tools for complex litigation in the 21st Century.

    Michael S. Melfi is an intellectual property attorney and digital entrepreneur. Michael has a dynamic background that allows him to provide insightful legal services, while creating business development strategies for funding and growth.

    Over the last decade Michael founded and led a national multi-media company. As COO & general counsel, Michael pioneered various experiential and digital marketing campaigns for Fortune 500 clients. As a thought leader and innovator, Michael began utilizing the Internet and various social media platforms to develop an online presence for his company in the top 1% of all websites globally. Since then Michael has worked with numerous national industry leading products and brands to monetize and grow their business digitally.

    With the advent of mainstream crowdfunding, Michael has become an expert in the Crowdfunding Industry, helping small and medium-size companies achieve funding goals and business objectives. Through these experiences and involvement with the digital platform, Michael gained valuable insight into the legal and business ramifications of the Internet and specifically Social Media.

    Michael is also the author of two books, The Simple Secrets of Social Media and The Simple Secrets of Crowdfunding. Michael is a speaker and guest lecturer on such topics as social media, crowdfunding, early stage growth & fundraising, and intellectual property.

Nominations Open for Outstanding Achievement Award

Dear Section Members:

This is the time of year the General Practice—Solo & Small Firm Section looks forward with anticipation to the State Bar Annual Meeting & Solo and Small Firm Institute to be held on September 17-19, at the DeVos Place in Grand Rapids. This year, the Section will be awarding its first annual Outstanding Achievement Award to a deserving member.


  • The Outstanding Achievement Award will be given annually to an attorney or attorneys, who are members of the General Practice—Solo & Small Firm Section and who have exhibited the highest standards of practice and commitment for the benefit of our section or others.

  • The recipient must be a member in good standing with the General Practice—Solo & Small Firm Section of the State Bar of Michigan.

  • The recipient's contribution may have been made during the past year or by virtue of cumulative effort or service during their career.

The Section is taking nominations from its members for the award. Nominations can be sent by e-mail or letter, postmarked by July 15, 2014.
