Dear Michigan Lawyer:
State Bar committees follow our Strategic Plan and build effective programs for the benefit of lawyers and the general public. Please join the rich history of service to the Bar through participation as a member of one of the many SBM committees. If the opportunity to become part of the Bar's efforts to improve justice in the state of Michigan appeals to you, you can explore the many possibilities for service. If you have questions about a committee, please check the committee roster and contact the staff liaison for that committee.
Committee service can be demanding, so please make sure you can commit to preparing for and attending meetings several times a year. Active use of an e-mail address is required for committee work. You should also know that travel, lodging, and other personal expenses of attending committee meetings are not reimbursed.
The list of State Bar committees available for service is on the Committee page. Take a look at the page to understand the sizes, jurisdictions, and meeting schedules and view the annual reports of committees that interest you. I encourage you to apply for committee service so you can be part of our efforts to improve State Bar programs and support lawyers, value the rule of law, and improve access to justice.
Applying for a committee appointment is easy. Enter your P# below and then submit requested information such as your resume or curriculum vitae by April 24. As president-elect, I will review the applications starting in late May and make the committee appointments by September 1. Due to the volume of applications we typically receive we cannot guarantee everyone a position on every committee they wish to join, but if you apply I give you my promise to make every attempt to find a way to make the best use of your interest in helping the profession and the public.
Lori A. Buiteweg
President-Elect, State Bar of Michigan
