Contracts

Contracts consist of consumer finance, construction, sales of goods, sales of services, employment, investment, and insurance contracts. We follow a three step approach to eliminate legalese in these documents. First, we identify the people who write the documents. They are as follows:

Table 1---Types of Contracts

    7. Consumer Finance contracts banks, savings and loans, private mortgage companies, and credit unions
    8. Home Construction contracts Michigan Association of Home Builders
    9. Sales of Goods contracts Michigan Automotive Dealers Association, etc.
    10. Sales of Services contracts
    11. Employment contracts corporations and unions
    12. Investment contracts corporations and mutual funds
    13. Insurance contracts insurance companies (life, health, car, home)

Second, we find people in the these groups who have the interest, ability, and courage to write these documents in plain English. And we ask them to join us to work in an organized way from within the system to eliminate legalese from these documents. Many of the members of our Plain English Subcommittee on Contracts are former Clarity Award winners.

Table 2--Plain English Subcommittee on Contracts

    David Daly Daimler Chrysler Corporation
    John Rintamacki Ford Motor Company
    Paul Steinkraus Ford Credit
    David Trahan Standard Federal Bank

Third, our subcommittee then finds clear examples of contracts, gives them Clarity Awards, and promotes them as good examples to follow. Below are some excerpts from some of the documents that we have given Clarity Awards to.

12. Investment Contracts

from Prospectus of Chrysler Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group (11/26/97)

Prospectus Summary This summary highlights information contained elsewhere in this Prospectus. It is not complete and may not contain all of the information that you should consider before investing in the common stock. You should read the entire Prospectus carefully, including the "Risk Factors" section and the financial statements and the notes to those statements.........

................................

Risk Factors You should carefully consider the following factors and other information in this Prospectus before deciding to invest in the shares.

Economic Conditions Dollar Thrifty Group's results of operations are affected by general economic conditions in the United States and Canada and by other factors that may be beyond its control. These factors include financing costs, competitive conditions in the vehicle rental industry and regulatory developments. A decline in general economic activity has historically led to a decline in both business and leisure travel and to lower demand for rental vehicles. Changes in the level of discretionary travel particularly affect Dollar's results because a high proportion of its customers are discretionary travelers, including leisure and other travelers who pay their own expenses.
