Top 20 Legal Documents
Writing has two characteristics, namely content (what you write) and style (how you say it.) We select our documents solely on the basis of their style. They prove that legal documents can be written in a clear style. In many cases we publish only an excerpt from the entire document. We make no representations about the content of these documents. Do not copy any of these documents or excerpts without legal advice. The goal of the plain English movement in the law is to apply the clear writing that is taught in law schools to actual documents written in the practice of law. But many law schools concentrate on brief writing, and not on the many other documents that lawyers write. Therefore, most of the documents that lawyers write still contain unclear writing (legalese). Furthermore, most of the activity in the movement is theoretical--someone suggesting how an actual legal document can be written more clearly. None of this recognizes real life. So we present below what we call the clearest legal documents that we have found in Michigan. And our challenge is this: 1) Do not suggest how each document can be written in clearer language. 2) Do not send us your theoretical example that is written in clearer language. 3) Do send us a document that has been used in the practice of law in Michigan that you think is written in clearer language than the document we have presented. 4) And if you live in another state, then do send us a document that has been used in the practice of law in your state that you think is written in clearer language than the document we have presented.
