Chair’s Letter from Ann Hollenbeck:
Educational Programs. As many of you know, the annual Health Law Institute, co-sponsored by the HCLS and ICLE, will be held on Thursday and Friday, March 5 and 6, 2009. It is a great program featuring numerous expert speakers on highly relevant health law topics. Please join us! For more information, go to http://www.icle.org.

The Medical/Legal Subcommittee is hosting a teleconference at Noon on Monday, March 16, 2009, to present on privilege and confidentiality issues under the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005. Jan Anderson, Esq. and Amy Barkholz, Esq. will be presenting on this topic, which follows-up on our December 9, 2008 teleconference.

The Providers Subcommittee is hosting a teleconference addressing Certificate of Need issues on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at Noon. Our speakers are Phyllis Adams, Esq. and Larry Horvath, manager, CON Program Section, Michigan Department of Community Health. The session will focus on key issues in 2009 under the Michigan certificate of need (CON) program, as well as present new developments in CON, compliance and enforcement issues and offer general tips for effective management of CON issues by hospitals and other health care providers. Topics will be addressed from the perspectives of both the provider and the CON Program Section.

There is no cost to section members for either of these teleconferences. See the links under Section Events for information or contact Denise Adams at hclsassistant@yahoo.com.

Thank you to the Technology Subcommittee (Mark Kopson, John Hazewinkel, and Deborah Williamson) for hosting the teleconference addressing HIPAA security audit issues in late January. Speakers David Miller of Compuware and Randy Gainer, Esq. presented a wealth of helpful information.

Save the Date: Our Legislative Update will be held on April 23, 2009, in Lansing. It will feature Senator Tom George as the key note speaker. Location to be announced. Also, mark your calendars for May 6, 2009, and May 20, 2009, as we will be hosting a two-part Medicare Advantage program. More information will follow as planning progresses.

Annual Meeting Planning. The Section’s annual meeting will be held on September 24, 2009. We are already planning our program and each of you should have received (by e-mail) a Call for Speakers and Topics. Please consider the topics you’d like to have addressed at this meeting and the speakers from whom you’d like to hear. If you wish to participate in our planning, please contact me at ahollenbeck@honigman.com.

Pro Bono Efforts. In these difficult times, the efforts of our Pro Bono Committee are more important now than ever. Do you have service opportunities to share? Do you wish to give your time? Please contact Rob Iwrey at riwrey@wachler.com.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me or any other Council member with your thoughts, questions, and suggestions for our Section. We welcome all ideas! Thank you.
