Special guest: Tom Anderson
Ms. Monaco called the meeting to order at approximately 7:35 a.m. with the introduction of Tom Anderson, our proposed speaker for the upcoming seminar at the Golf Outing on June 13th at Fox Hills Country Club. Mr. Anderson briefly provided his background as a trainer and outlined his plans for the seminar. After a lively discussion on a range of related issues, Mr. Anderson took his leave. Wrapping up this topic, Ms. Yee informed the Council that the ALA anticipated that all costs for the event would be covered by corporate sponsors, and she agreed to coordinate our proposed plans for the seminar with Laura Collins.
At this point, the minutes for the March meeting were approved. Ms. Mann then noted that she did not have any response from Eastern Michigan University yet regarding our proposal for the development of online seminars, but she hopes to hear something before our next meeting. She then distributed an "updated" membership list which the State Bar had sent to her (see attached); inaccuracies were noted immediately. Ms. Mann will check this list against our previous one to see if she can determine what happened.
Ms. Yee handed out a draft of an article on our February seminar on MDPs and asked for additional ideas for the upcoming newsletter. Ms. Schriner suggested a calendar of events be included along with an article on a timely topic of interest (e.g., gardening) from the Internet.
The balance in our account stands at $8,173.53 according to Ms. Schriner. This includes $4,090.00 in dues, a total which does not reconcile with the 57 members on the list noted above. Ms. Schriner will look into this with the State Bar.
Ms. Monaco asked for potential topics for the seminar at the Annual Meeting. The possibility of repeating the seminar on MDPs or the upcoming fitness seminar was discussed, but there was little enthusiasm for this alternative. Mr. Parsons suggested finding a speaker to discuss the changes/trends in law firms in light of the current shift in the economy and/or the merging mania in law firms today, which was well received. Ms. Monaco requested that those members of the Council who were planning to attend the ALA seminar research topics there.
At approximately 8:55 a.m. Ms. Monaco reminded the Council that we would meet next on Tuesday, May 8, at 7:30 a.m. at Bakers Square in Birmingham, and she adjourned the meeting.
