Meeting Minutes

June 11, 2002

    Members Present:
    John Gorzalski
    Dave Roback
    Michelle Kimbro
    Jeanne Yee

The meeting was called to order at approximately 7:45 a.m. Kappa Mann was also in attendance.

    May, 2002 minutes were approved.

Treasurer's Report: Our balance as of Apr 30 was $5,077.94.

We will not host a presentation at the annual State Bar meeting.

Ms. Kimbro and Mr. Gorzalski will attend the State Bar strategic planning session on June 13.

Annual report for our Section was completed by Mr. Gorzalski and e-mailed to the State Bar on May 14.

Mr. Gorzalski met with Karen Williams and James Horsch at the State Bar to discuss their concerns regarding the annual dues. The State Bar has determined, based upon an opinion from their general counsel, that the affiliate section dues belong to the State Bar's General Fund. We are concerned about how we will be able to conduct our mission without any operating funds. Several options were discussed. At the strategic planning session on Thursday, Ms. Kimbro and Mr. Gorzalski will follow up with Ms. Williams to discuss the options available.

Since we are uncertain about the status of our funding, we decided to forgo the annual contribution to the Access to Justice Campaign.

Ms. Kimbro has the check for $400 for Tom Anderson for next week's golf outing.

We are looking for ideas for our next newsletter. Mr. Gorzalski has an interesting article on instant messaging. Ms. Yee suggested an article about phone audits from Plante & Moran. Since we had an article from Plante & Moran in the last newsletter, it may be better to include this in the fall newsletter.

We will hold off on deciding on a fall presentation.

Oakland University contacted Ms. Mann to let us know that they are partnering with Cooley Law School and want to draw on their resources. The University expressed their interest in developing a course for us for at a nominal fee. They are interested in developing a showcase course as part of their marketing efforts. However, they would want a list of topics to select from. We discussed our concerns of whether we would generate enough interest from our group. Ms. Mann will follow up on the definition of "nominal fee".

Eastern University contacted Ms. Mann to see if we were still interested in adding a link to their website from our website. Mr. Gorzalski will follow up on whether we will be able to add a description to describe the website link.

Meeting adjourned at approximately 8:45 am.
