Annual Report 2001-2002

The Law Student Section (LSS) had another great year of student participation. The LSS successfully dealt with the anticipated governing council turnover from graduation that has hindered the LSS in the past. Currently, fourteen of the fifteen LSSGC positions are filled for the upcoming year.

This past year began with the 2001 Annual Meeting in Detroit. Our joint program with the Young Lawyers Section centered on the influx of technology in the courtroom as well as the future of electronic filing in Michigan. This year the governing council has decided to forego putting on a program in favor of exerting its resources within and amongst the law schools respectively.

First, the LSSGC is attempting to increase it presence and student awareness by increasing its on-campus involvement. This is primarily being done by sponsoring and supporting various functions and activities at the individual law schools.

Second, the LSSGC is trying to increase the benefits of section membership. The LSSGC is currently in the process of planning a golf outing and mixer to be attended by LSS members and local employers from various legal fields. The event will coincide with the arrival of on-campus interviews this fall.

Throughout the year, we have continued to increase our ties with the Young Lawyers Section. The LSSGC continues to encourage its members to attend the YLS events with the hope of making more students aware of not only their membership with the Bar but the opportunities that exist among the various sections as well. I would like to thank Evanne Dietz and the YLSGC for the support, help, and guidance they have given the LSS over the past few years.

For our holiday project, we donated money to the Access to Justice fund.

I would like to thank each member of the LSSGC for the efforts put forth over the last year. My time serving on the council and as chairperson has been very rewarding. Congratulations and good luck to those who are leaving, staying, and coming on board.

Finally, please help me welcome our incoming chair, Jennifer Woodside.

Rolf Lowe, Chairperson
