On February 18, 2008, the D. Augustus Straker Bar Association (“Straker”) conducted a High School Outreach Day at Oak Park High School. The purpose of the High School Outreach Day was to help educate students about important legal issues and encourage them to consider a career in law.
More than 35 students from Oak Park High School participated in the Straker Bar High School Outreach Day. Students received a brief introduction from Straker President Tim Gardner which served as a springboard to discussions about the legal profession. The first session of the program was held at Oak Park High School where students learned about the challenges and rewards of a career in law. Straker volunteers included:
50th District Court Judge Cynthia T. Walker
Attorney Stephanie Jones, Harness Dickey & Pierce, PLC
Attorney Michelle Thomas, Bodman LLP
Attorney Angela Diggs Jackson, Oak Park City Council
Professor Lewis Langham, Thomas M. Cooley Law School Professor John A. Taylor, Thomas M. Cooley Law School
There was also a Anti-Gang Violence seminar conducted by the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation. More than 40 students received insight from former gang members about the realities of gang life. In addition, students were advised about the consequences that are associated with gang activity. The D. Augustus Straker Bar Association sponsored this presentation.
The D. Augustus Straker Bar Association was founded on October 4, 1990, as a special Purpose Bar Association recognized by the State Bar of Michigan. Its membership includes a racially diverse coalition of lawyers, judges, and other legal professionals. The organization is named in honor of D. Augustus Straker, the pioneering African-American attorney, author and jurist. The mission of the Straker Bar is to increase minority representation in the legal profession, support and encourage legal practice opportunities for minorities, and facilitate equal justice for underserved members of the Oakland County community.
Many thanks to Straker High School Outreach Coordinator, 50th District Court Judge Cynthia T. Walker. In addition, thanks to Straker volunteers and Oak Park High School.
I invite you to become involved in Straker. For more information, please contact Straker President Tim Gardner at gardnerjr5@aol.com or at (313) 590-1634. Thank you.
