The Women Lawyers Association of Michigan (“WLAM”) is a statewide organization, the purpose of which is to secure the rights of women in society and advance the interests of women members of the legal profession, to promote improvements in the administration of justice, to promote equality and social justice for all people, to improve legal relations between the legal profession and the public, and to encourage the continued legal education of lawyers.

The Western Region of the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan, which encompasses Kent County and the surrounding area, is more than ninety members strong and is one of the most active regions in the state. We have monthly membership luncheons from September through April. Our Holiday Reception, held each December, draws large numbers of local judges, who are invited as our guests, as are all newly-admitted women lawyers. Each May, we hold our Annual Dinner to celebrate our accomplishments for the year and enjoy a presentation by a special guest speaker. June marks our Annual Women Lawyers vs. Judges Charity Softball Game, which raises money for the YWCA of Grand Rapids and the Kent County Legal Assistance Center. There is plenty of spirited rivalry but it is all for a good cause. But perhaps the most important role of WLAM in our region has been to offer personal support and unique networking opportunities for women. This is made possible through an active membership that includes many women judges and both female and male attorneys.
