State Bar Announces Law Day Luncheon Speaker
3/27/00 University of Michigan Law School Professor Emeritus John W. Reed will serve as keynote speaker at the State Bar of Michigan's Law Day luncheon on Monday, May 1, 2000. The luncheon, which will be held at the Lansing Center in Downtown Lansing, will honor sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade Law Day essay contest winners. The Crystal Apple Award honoring a K-12 teacher who has made outstanding contributions through law-related education will also be presented by the Michigan Lawyers' Auxiliary during the luncheon. Professor Reed is a Thomas M. Cooley Professor of Law Emeritus. He is a former dean and professor of law at Wayne State University and has been a professor of law at the Universities of Oklahoma and Colorado. He has also had visiting professorships at Harvard, Yale and New York University. Reed is chairman of the State Bar's Standing Committee on Judicial Selection. He is an Academic Fellow and the administrative secretary for the International Society of Barristers and serves as editor of the International Society of Barristers Quarterly. He is also a member of the Michigan Supreme Court Historical Society Board of Directors and chairman of the National Conference of Bar Examiners/Multi-state Bar Examination Evidence Committee. Reed was the 1989 recipient of the State Bar's Roberts P. Hudson Award and received the Samuel E. Gates Award from the American College of Trial Lawyers in 1985. He also received the Harrison Tweed Award in 1983 from the Association of Continuing Legal Education Administrators. He is a graduate of Cornell University's Law School, where he received his LL. B. in 1942, and attended Columbia University's Law School where he earned his LL.M. in 1949.
