State Bar Announces 2000 New President's Retreat

The State Bar of Michigan will hold this year's New President's Retreat at Treetops Sylvan Resort in Gaylord on June 2 and 3, 2000. The Retreat is a hands-on-training program for new (2000-2001) local and special purpose bar presidents. It includes "how to's" on everything from increasing membership to finding new sources of non-dues revenue. The incoming presidents will have a chance to network and share their ideas about their upcoming presidency. State Bar President-elect Thomas J. Ryan will also be there to speak about the Bar's priorities for the new millennium.

Programs will begin on Friday, June 2 with the following schedule:

    11 a.m.- Registration Noon - Lunch and small group discussions

    1 p.m. - Welcome (Thomas G. Plunkett, Chairperson, Local Bar Liaison Committee) Introductions (Carl E. Chioni and Dawn A. Van Hoek, Co-Chairs, New Presidents Retreat)

    1:30-2:30 p.m. - "Motivation is Everything" This powerful session explores internal and external motivation and the desire to reach new heights-both personally and professionally. (Joy Carver, Stephen Covey Institute)

    2:45 p.m. - "The Big Picture: A look at the political backdrop of your presidency" (David Haynes, Public Affairs Associates, Inc., Kimberly M. Cahill, Chairperson, Representative Assembly, Alfred M. Butzbaugh, President, State Bar of Michigan)

    4 p.m. - "Buzz Sessions: Looking for a Killer Idea?" Bring your imagination and your best ideas to a roundtable discussion with other new incoming presidents.

    6 p.m. - Reception sponsored by the Paul Goebel Group

    7 p.m. - Dinner

    9 p.m. - Hospitality Suite sponsored by Association Members Only

Saturday, June 3, 2000:

    7:30 a.m. - Breakfast

    8:30 a.m. - "10 Ways to Avoid Me: How to keep your nose clean and your house (association) in order" (John F. Van Bolt, Executive Director, Attorney Discipline Board)

    9 a.m. - "Beyond 2000: What are the Bar's priorities in the new millenium?" (Thomas J. Ryan, President-Elect, State Bar of Michigan)

    9:45 a.m. - Justice Marilyn J. Kelly

    10:30 a.m. - "Ready…Set…Go, Practical Ideas for your Presidency" Top 10 "Buzz Session" ideas you can use now in your association. (Lorraine H. Weber, Consultant - Open Justice, State Bar of Michigan)

    11:30 a.m. - Door Prize Drawing

    11:45 a.m. - Deluxe Box Lunch
