State Bar Young Lawyers Section Hosts Annual Race for Justice

August 1, 2000

The State Bar of Michigan's Young Lawyers Section (YLS) will host its annual Race for Justice on Tuesday, September 19, 2000. The race, sponsored in conjunction with the Bar's 65th Annual Meeting in Detroit, will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Belle Isle Park. Registration starts at 5:00 p.m.

All are invited to walk or run in either the 5K run or the One-Mile Fun Run. The YLS will donate all proceeds from the event to the State Bar's Access to Justice Fund for the support of Michigan legal aid organizations. There are 1.5 million people who live in poverty in the state of Michigan and are eligible for legal aid services. Currently, there is only one legal aid attorney for every 6,500 individuals in Michigan. Programs like the Race for Justice are designed to increase legal services to those in need.

Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer and the Race's founder, Jon Muth, are the honorary co-chairs of the race. Darryl Segars and Angelique Strong are co-chairing the event for the YLS with the assistance of YLS Chairperson Roshunda Price-Harper and Karen Williams from the State Bar of Michigan.

The entry fee is $15 for those who register by September 1, 2000 and $20 for those who register after the first of September. The entry fee is waived for participants who submit a pledge of $100 or more.
