The State Bar of Michigan Seeks Executive Director

The State Bar of Michigan (SBM) seeks an Executive Director. This is a unique opportunity for an exceptional leader and lawyer who is devoted to the legal profession and desires to improve the justice system in Michigan. The SBM is a unified bar with over 33,000 active and inactive members, 35 sections and 47 standing committees. The Executive Director manages a staff of 60 employees at the SBM office in Lansing and an annual budget of $8 million. The Executive Director reports to the 31 member Board of Commissioners.

The SBM is a public body corporate, regulated by the Michigan Supreme Court and funded by mandatory member dues set by the Supreme Court. The 149 member Representative Assembly is the final policy making body of the SBM. The mission statement of the SBM is, "The State Bar shall aid in promoting improvements in the administration of justice and advancements in jurisprudence, in improving relations between the legal profession and the public, and in promoting the interest of the legal profession in this State."

Duties of the Executive Director include:

  • Vision and leadership to assist the Representative Assembly in establishing SBM policies and to assist the Board of Commissioners and SBM officers in effectuating those policies
  • Leadership and inspiration to the SBM members and staff
  • Productive relations with the Supreme Court, legislators and executive office
  • Fiscal integrity of the SBM
  • Management of staff and finances
The following are required.
  • Held leadership positions
  • Understanding the challenges which confront the justice system, lawyers and bar associations
  • Actively dealt with issues relevant to legal profession and justice system
  • Demonstrated management skills
  • Demonstrated skill in building strong relationships and developing consensus
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and an open profession
  • Demonstrated commitment to improve the profession and the justice system
A Juris Doctor degree is preferred. Preference will be given to the following.
  • Understanding of the challenges which are unique to Michigan
  • Proven professional success as practicing lawyer, judge, legislator, law school educator or Bar executive
  • Recognized standing in profession
  • Successful experience interacting with government officials
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups
  • Media savvy
Salary and benefits are negotiable.
