"Ask the Lawyers" Moderator Retires After 30 Years

5/31/00

Monte L. Higgins, moderator of the "Ask the Lawyers" show in Mt. Pleasant, retired in early May of this year after 30 years of moderating the program. The program, which airs two shows per month on WCMU-TV 14 (Mt. Pleasant/Bay City), runs from September through May and will continue with a new host this fall.

Higgins attended Ferris State College and graduated in 1966 with a degree in Secondary Teaching with majors in Chemistry and Biology and minors in Physics and Physical Science. In 1964, Central Michigan Educational Resources Council employed Higgins as an on-camera teacher of science for students in grades 5 through 8. In 1967, he became a full-time employee of Central Michigan University as a producer/director and traffic manager for the University's soon to be launched television station. In 1967, when WCMU-TV went on the air, Higgins wrote program logs and oversaw the traffic operations.

Higgins and his wife Sadie, have three sons, and three grandchildren. His retirement plans include moving to Albuquerque NM, where he will "remodel his home and landscape the yard." He also plans extensive traveling to visit with his grandchildren.

"Ask the Lawyers" programs are aired in several locations throughout the state. The Genesee County program, which airs on ABC 12 (WJRT) in Flint, features a guest attorney answering pre-recorded legal questions asked by the public. Viewers can also tune in to live broadcasts of "Ask the Lawyers" on WNMU-TV 13 in Marquette and WGVU-TV 35/WGVK-TV 52 in Grand Rapids. Check local listings for dates and times. The shows are sponsored by the State Bar of Michigan.
