State Bar Senior Lawyers Section Seminar to Emphasize Protection of Elders

9/8/00

Protecting our elders from abuse and fraud is the central theme of the program to be presented by the Senior Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Michigan on Wednesday, September 20, 2000. The program, which will be held in conjunction with the State Bar's 65th Annual Meeting, runs from 10 a.m. until noon, on level 2, Room W-2-66 of the Cobo Conference Center in downtown Detroit. Three widely experienced attorneys will discuss cases where the elderly have been mistreated or "ripped off." Practical tips will be given to the elderly, their families, and caregivers about warning signs of possible abuse and fraud as well as information on where senior citizens can turn for help.

The speakers include:

  • David Edick, Health Care and Fraud Division of the Michigan Attorney General
    Topic: Elder Abuse
  • Timothy VerHey, Assistant U. S. Attorney
Topic: "Boiler Room" Cases Involving Senior Citizens
  • Christopher Becker, Kent County Prosecutor's Office
Topic: Investigation and Prosecution of Elder Fraud

This program is free of charge and open to the general public. Senior citizens, their families, and professionals who work with them, will benefit from this informative seminar. A videocassette of the program will be available at a modest charge.

To reserve a seat, order a videocassette, or obtain additional information, please call Robert Boyer at (248) 646-1691 or George J. Fulkerson (after 9/8) at (248) 646-6968.
