Attorney General Granholm to Address Law Student Section at State Bar's Annual Meeting

9/12/00

Attorney General Jennifer Granholm will be among the featured speakers to address the State Bar of Michigan's Law Student Section during the Bar's 65th Annual Meeting at the Cobo Center in downtown Detroit. Granholm's presentation is part of a joint program with the State Bar's Young Lawyers Section.

The Law Student Section program, which begins at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 21, will also include guest speakers Kimberly A. Paulson of Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone, P.L.C. in Detroit and Detroit attorney Carol Romej of Butzel Long. All speakers will conduct a Power Point presentation. The topic is "The Response of the Law to Emerging Technology."

Granholm made history when she was elected Michigan's first female attorney general in November 1998. She is the state's 51st Attorney general and the first new attorney general in 37 years, following the retirement of Frank J. Kelley.

As the "people's lawyer," and the top law enforcement officer in the state, Granholm has made child protection, high tech crime prevention, consumer and environmental protection, and senior citizen safety key priorities for her office.

An honors graduate of both the University of California at Berkley and Harvard Law School, she was appointed Wayne County Corporation Counsel in 1994. Before joining the Wayne County staff, she was a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney's Office.

As an associate at Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone, P.L.C., Kimberly Paulson practices in the areas of commercial litigation and intellectual property law. She serves on the American Bar Association's Intellectual Property Law and Litigation sections and the State Bar of Michigan's Computer Law, and Arts, Communications, Entertainment, and Sports (ACES) sections.

Paulson received her B.A. in English from the University of Michigan in 1992 and her J.D. from Fordham University School of Law in 1997 where she served as associate editor of the Fordham Intellectual Property, Media & Entertainment Law Journal and the Fordham Moot Court Board.

Carol Romej, a senior attorney practicing in Butzel Long's Detroit office, also co-chairs the firm's Technology and E-Commerce Practice and is a member of the Business, Corporate and Taxation Practice Group. Her practice focuses on technology issues related to companies, Internet issues, E-Commerce, and other technology related concerns.

Romej is the former general counsel for Apex Global Internet Services, Inc. and served as an advisor for the Commercial Internet Exchange Association. She is a graduate of the Detroit College of Law (1993), received her B.B.A. from Eastern Michigan University (1988), her B.A. from the University of Michigan (1984) and is finalizing an LL.M. in Corporation and Finance Law at Wayne State University School of Law.

The State Bar of Michigan's 65th Annual Meeting will take place Wednesday through Friday, September 20-22, 2000.
