State Bar of Michigan Annual Meeting Agenda Highlights

The State Bar of Michigan will host its 66th Annual Meeting at the Lansing Center, September 12-14. The three-day event will provide an opportunity for legal professionals to attend seminars, continuing legal education workshops, and section meetings. Luncheons featuring prominent speakers, award presentations and the installation of the State Bar's new president and officers will also take place during the meeting. All sessions are open to media. Media credentials will be available in advance of the conference through the Communications Department and during the conference in the media room, which is Boardroom 2 on the second floor of the Lansing Center.

The media room will be staffed from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. September 12-13, and 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on September 14. It will be closed from noon to 1:30 p.m. on each day. A telephone and computer terminal (connected to the Internet) will be available for media use. The media room telephone number is 517-371-5653.

A limited number of complimentary luncheon tickets are available. Luncheon tickets must be reserved in advance. Please e-mail Sue Oudsema at soudsema@mail.michbar.org to make reservations for meal tickets no later than September 10th. Please pick up your tickets and press passes from the media room.

Luncheon Speakers

Wednesday, Sept. 12 Robert F. Kennedy Jr. - Professor and attorney.
Recognized expert in municipal and governmental responsibility for environmental issues.
Thursday, Sept. 13 Cardinal Adam Maida - Archbishop of Detroit, Attorney.
Friday, Sept. 14 Barry Scheck, Attorney, DNA Expert, co-founder of the Innocence Project

All luncheons will be at noon in Hall A, 1st Floor, Lansing Center.

Robert F. Kennedy will be available for an interview after he addresses the Environmental Law Section. Estimated time for the interview is 3:15 p.m. in the Media Room on the 2nd floor.

Cardinal Maida will be available for an interview in the Media Room at 11:15 a.m., prior to his luncheon speech.

Perspectives and Choices in Electric Deregulation. Room 203, 2nd Floor.
Noon Luncheon awards presentation and featured speaker. Champion of Justice Award in recognition of outstanding achievements that have benefited the community and/or state.
Recipients: Godfrey J. Dillard, Hon. Martin M. Doctoroff, Elizabeth Gleicher and Daniel M. Morley.

Presentation of the Frank J. Kelley Distinguished Public Servant Award to John D. O'Hair

2 p.m. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will address the Environmental Law Section. There will be a question and answer session if time permits.

4:15 p.m. Labor and Employment Law Section. Keynote address by Hon. Robert P.Young Jr.- Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court.

Thursday, Sept. 13
8 a.m. "Let's Talk": Breakfast with John Berry, Executive Director, State Bar of Michigan. Governor's room, 2nd floor.
9 a.m. Sixth Circuit Court Admissions Ceremony. Charles E. Chamberlain Federal Building, Courtroom 128.
10 a.m. Children's Law Section. "Representing Individuals Who Are Physically, Mentally, or Disabled and the Applicability of the Americans with Disabilities Act in Child Protective Proceedings."
Rooms 103 and 104, 1st floor.
10 a.m. Representative Assembly meeting in the Capitol Ballrooms I and II of the Radisson Hotel. The Assembly is the top policy-making body of the State Bar of Michigan. The issue of judicial appointment v. election will be covered
10:30 a.m. Young Lawyers Section. "Technology in the Courtroom."
Banquet rooms 2 and 4, 1st floor.
Noon Luncheon, presentation of awards and featured speaker. Cummiskey Pro Bono Award will be presented to Steven Cernak. The Liberty Bell Award will be presented to non-lawyers Mark Hawkins and Marian Impastato who have made a significant contribution to "justice for all under the law."
2 p.m. Open Justice presentation of the public television presentation "…And Justice for All."
3 p.m. "A Jury of our Peers." Join members of the Open Justice Commission and other leading experts to explore what is being done in our state to improve the jury system and how lawyers and judges can help.
4 p.m. "Opening Doors and Eliminating Barriers - The Challenge of Being Disabled Within Our Legal System." Results of a study and the recommendations that the Open Justice Commission will make to address the very real problems faced by the disabled.
6 p.m. Grand Reception. Paying tribute to 50-year honorees. Halls A and B 1st floor. Please contact media room for tickets.

Friday, Sept. 14
10 a.m. Criminal Law Section. A panel of resource persons knowledgeable about the funding and delivery of indigent criminal defense services. Michigan ranks 47th in the nation in the delivery of indigent defense services in criminal cases.
Noon Luncheon, presentation of awards and featured speaker. The Roberts P. Hudson Award is the top award of the State Bar of Michigan, recognizing extraordinary service to the Bar and the State. Presented to Alfred Butzbaugh and Judge Victoria Roberts. Swearing-in of new bar president - Bruce W. Neckers.
2 p.m. Institute of Continuing Legal Education. Film clips from Trials of the Century. Banquet rooms 5 and 7, 1st floor. See complete program information for more CLE presentations.
