Open Justice Symposium Addresses Race, Gender and Ethnicity Issues in Michigan's Court System
5/24/01 University of Michigan President Lee C. Bollinger will moderate an Open Justice Round Table symposium entitled "And Justice for All," Thursday, June 7 at 6:00 p.m. in East Lansing. Organized by the State Bar of Michigan's Open Justice Commission, the symposium is designed to identify a variety of issues in the Michigan court system related to race, gender, ethnicity, disabilities and sexual orientation. The Round Table will be taped before a live invited audience at the studios of WKAR - TV on the campus of Michigan State University. The hour-long program will feature three pre-produced vignettes to identify common as well as unique open justice issues in Michigan. A distinguished panel of judges, lawyers and citizens will generate discussion and provide analysis. Panel members are:
The goals of the Round Table are to inform, educate and build the public's trust and confidence in the judicial system. A reception will immediately follow the taping. Copies of the program will be made available to public television stations, community organizations, public agencies and schools around the state. The project is being supervised by the Public Information and Education Committee of the Open Justice Commission. Individuals directly responsible for the development of the Round Table are: Daniel Hopp (Chair), Hon. Vesta Svenson, Prof. Sue Carter, Attorney Tom Howlett, Media Specialist Nichole Kelley-Korson, Attorney Henry Clay III and Special Advisor, Lorraine Weber. Professor Timothy Little of MSU will advise on the development of a secondary school curriculum component. The Co-Chairs of the Open Justice Commission, Justice Marilyn Kelly of the Michigan Supreme Court and Judge Harold Hood of the Michigan Court of Appeals will join Professor Carter from MSU's School of Journalism in providing an overview to the program.
