Justice Elizabeth Weaver to Serve as State Bar Law Day Luncheon Speaker

2/26/01

Michigan Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth A. Weaver will serve as keynote speaker at the State Bar of Michigan's Law Day luncheon on Tuesday, May 1, 2001.

The luncheon, which will be held at the Lansing Center in Downtown Lansing, will honor sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade Law Day essay contest winners. The Crystal Apple Award honoring a K-12 teacher who has made outstanding contributions through law-related education will also be presented by the Michigan Lawyers' Auxiliary during the luncheon.

Justice Weaver has served as a judge in Michigan for the past 27 years and has been elected six times-as a trial judge, appellate judge, and Supreme Court justice. She was elected Leelanau County probate/juvenile judge in November 1974, and was re-elected to six-year terms in 1976 and 1982, serving through January 1, 1987.

Justice Weaver was appointed to the Michigan Commission on Criminal Justice by Governor William Milliken; to the Michigan Committee on Juvenile Justice by Governors James Blanchard and John Engler; and to chair the Governor's Task Force for Children's Justice and the Trial Court Assessment Commission by Governor Engler.

In 1986, Justice Weaver was elected to the Michigan Court of Appeals, Third District, for a six-year term, and re-elected in 1992. She was elected to the Michigan Supreme Court in 1994 and served as Chief Justice from 1999 to January 2001.
