Reginald M. Turner Becomes State Bar of Michigan's 68th President

Detroit attorney and civic activist Reginald M. Turner was sworn in as
the 68th president of the State Bar of Michigan on Friday, September
27th, 2002 by the Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, Maura
Corrigan. Turner will serve as president of the 35,000-member organization
for the 2002-2003 bar year. During this period, he will focus his efforts
on implementing the Bar's Strategic Plan with particular emphasis on
financial management, member services and justice initiatives. Turner
succeeds Immediate Past President Bruce W. Neckers of Grand Rapids.
Turner, a partner in the Detroit law firm Clark Hill, has practiced labor and employment law and governmental relations for over 15 years. "Reginald Turner is continuing Clark Hill's tradition of Bar leadership, which includes three State Bar Presidents in recent history," said Clark Hill CEO John Hern. "His experience in a wide variety of professional environments, from the City of Detroit to the White House, and his dedication to public service, make him eminently qualified to lead the State Bar. We are proud to support him as the new President of the State Bar of Michigan." The Michigan Supreme Court appointed Turner to the State Bar of Michigan Board of Commissioners in September 1995, following his two terms on the Representative Assembly. Also that year, he received the Bar's "Outstanding Young Lawyer" award. In 1998, Wayne County lawyers elected Turner to a three- year term on the Board of Commissioners. He became vice president of the Bar in September 2000, and president-elect in 2001. He is the chairperson of the Bar's Public Policy Committee and a past chair of its Access to Justice Task Force. Turner is also a Fellow of the prestigious Michigan State Bar Foundation. He was recently elected a Vice-President of the National Bar Association. Turner is a member of the American Arbitration Association's Michigan Employment Advisory Council, and is certified in arbitration by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. He is also a member of the Labor and Employment Sections of the American Bar Association, the National Bar Association and the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association. In addition, he is State Membership Chair for the American Bar Association. He is a frequent speaker at the State Bar's Labor and Employment Section seminars and writes for its publications. Turner has governmental experience at the federal, state and local levels, and he regularly counsels clients and advocates for them on important matters of public policy. In 1996-97, he completed a White House Fellowship in Washington, D.C. He spent his tenure working as an aide to former Housing and Urban Development Secretaries Henry Cisneros and Andrew Cuomo and coordinating a nine-agency Presidential Task Force that addressed socioeconomic issues in riot-plagued St. Petersburg, Florida. He also chaired a White House delegation that toured South Africa and Mozambique. Turner remains active in public service and in civic and charitable organizations. He is Chairman of the City of Detroit Board of Ethics. He represents Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick on the Detroit Board of Education. He formerly served on Governor Engler's Blue Ribbon Commission on Michigan Gaming and on the City of Detroit Brownfield Redevelopment Advisory Authority. Turner is a Vice Chairman of the Board of the Detroit Institute of Arts. He is a Director of the United Way Community Services and the Greater Downtown Partnership, Inc. He is also a member of the Old Newsboys' Goodfellows Fund. Turner is a 1987 graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, where he received the Irving Stenn Jr., Award for leadership. After graduation, he completed a Michigan Supreme Court clerkship with then-Justice Dennis Archer. Turner and his wife Marcia have two daughters.
