State Bar Representative Assembly to Meet in East Lansing on January 26

The Representative Assembly of the State Bar of Michigan will meet on Saturday, January 26, 2002 at the East Lansing Marriott hotel. The Representative Assembly is the final policy-making body of the State Bar. On the calendar for discussion at the meeting will be the following items:
- Consideration of a proposed amendment to the Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct presented by the State Bar Committee on Multidisciplinary Practices regarding ancillary and joint services to clients. The proposed amendments clarify how lawyers may offer non-law ancillary services and joint services; permit lawyers to exchange referrals with non- lawyers without compensation; and permit fee-sharing between lawyers and non-lawyers when providing ancillary or joint services to clients. The proposed amendments do not permit non-lawyer ownership or control of law firms.
- Consideration of a proposal condemning the U.S. Department of Justice Order monitoring communications between attorneys and their clients and urging the U.S. Department of Justice to immediately rescind its rule abrogating attorney-client privilege.
- Consideration of a proposal condemning the Presidential military order requiring the trial of suspected non-citizen non-military alleged terrorists in military courts, and urging President Bush to rescind the military order to ensure that non-citizen non-military accuseds are tried in civilian civil and criminal courts.
