12/10/03

On Friday, January 9, 2004, the State Bar of Michigan will hold a seminar on the laws, ethics rules, and the new campaign finance laws affecting judicial campaigns. The purpose of the seminar is to educate judicial candidates for the 2004 elections. Incumbent judges facing re-election, lawyers seeking judicial office, and members of the news media who cover judicial elections are encouraged to attend. The event will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Lansing Center, located at 333 E. Michigan Ave. Tuition for the seminar is $60 per attendee.

Seminar faculty will include Evelyn Quiroga, Disclosure Division Analyst, Bureau of Elections; Thomas K. Byerley, Director of Professional Standards for the State Bar of Michigan; and 46th District Court Judge Susan Moiseev, a member of the Subcommittee on Professional Ethics. Some of the topics that will be addressed include filing for candidacy, campaign timing and management of funds, advertisements, campaign complaints, and divestiture.

Seating is limited. For more information and to sign up for the seminar, contact Gloria Jones, State Bar Professional Standards Coordinator, at (517) 346-6336.
