State Bar Representative Assembly Elects 2003-2004 Officers
9/29/03 Daniel M. Levy, Elizabeth A. Jamieson, and Lori A. Buiteweg have been installed as the State Bar of Michigan Representative Assembly officers for 2003-2004. They were elected during the State Bar 68th Annual Meeting in Lansing. Former Assembly Vice-Chairperson Daniel M. Levy of Detroit is the Assembly's new Chairperson. Former Assembly Clerk Elizabeth A. Jamieson of Grand Rapids was elected to the position of Vice-Chairperson, and Lori A. Buiteweg of Ann Arbor was elected as Assembly Clerk. The Representative Assembly is the final policy-making body of the State Bar of Michigan. The Assembly officers also hold seats on the State Bar Board of Commissioners. Levy, of Detroit, has served as an Assistant Attorney General for the state since 1992 and currently heads the Criminal Division's Welfare and Tax Fraud Section. He is a former Special Assistant U.S. Attorney and Berrien County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney. Levy is a member of the State Bar Criminal Law Section and Prisons and Corrections Section and has served on both section councils. He is an Executive Board Member on the Michigan Regional Advisory Board of the Anti-Defamation League and co-chairs the Civil Rights Committee. He also served on the state's Bias Crime Task Force and currently serves on the Michigan Alliance Against Hate Crimes. Levy received a B.A. in Communications from the University of Michigan in 1981 and a J.D. from the Wayne State University School of Law in 1986.
Jamieson practices with the firm of Varnum, Riddering, Schmidt & Howlett, LLP, in Grand Rapids and focuses on creditor rights, including bankruptcy law and collection litigation. She is also a certified facilitative mediator. Jamieson has been active in State Bar work, serving on the Board of Commissioners as a representative of the Young Lawyers Section (1995- 1998) and as a member of the Representative Assembly since 1999. She has also served as the Assembly Review Committee chairperson, Hearings Committee chairperson, a member and chairperson of the Young Lawyers Section Executive Council and Quality of Professional Life Committees, and a member of the Communications Committee. She is a member of three State Bar sections- Business, Litigation, and Alternative Dispute Resolution. Jamieson has also been actively involved in the Grand Rapids Bar Association (serving on the Board of Trustees 2002-2003), the Western District of the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan (serving as president 2002-2003), and the American Bar Association. Jamieson received a B.A. in Speech/Communications and German from Albion College in 1985 and a J.D. from the Detroit College of Law in 1988.
Buiteweg has practiced family law and domestic relations mediation since January of 2001 with the firm of Nichols, Sacks, Slank & Sendelbach, P.C. in Ann Arbor. She previously practiced for 10 years in general civil litigation with the firm of Conlin, McKenny & Philbrick, P.C. Buiteweg has been a member of the State Bar of Michigan Character and Fitness Review Panel since 2000 and a member of the Representative Assembly since 1999, serving on the Representative Assembly Rules and Calendar Committee from 2002-2003. Buiteweg has also served in several roles for the Washtenaw County Bar Association, including president from 1999-2000. She was also a member of the Washtenaw County Unified Trial Court committee and the Washtenaw County Family Court Task Force. Buiteweg received a B.A. in Spanish from The University of Michigan in 1986 and a J.D. from Wayne State University Law School in 1990.
