Attorney Dues Hearing Begins in Lansing

1/29/03

The first in a series of six public hearings organized by the Representative Assembly of the State Bar of Michigan kicked off in Lansing on Tuesday, January 28, 2003 at the State Bar of Michigan Michael Franck Building. The hearings provide an opportunity for attorneys to voice their opinions about proposed increases in the dues and fees that they pay. Members of the Representative Assembly's Hearings Committee (left to right) Timothy K. Morris, Port Huron; Terri L. Stangl, Saginaw; Edward L. Haroutunian, chair, Bingham Farms; John T. Berry, executive director State Bar of Michigan, Michael J. Blau, Special Issues committee member, Ann Arbor and Vincent Romano, Grosse Pointe Park, participated actively and led the discussion. Also present, but not pictured James T. Hogan, Mount Clemens and Thomas C. Rombach, Assembly chairperson. The Representative Assembly will meet in East Lansing on February 22nd to consider the proposed dues package. The Assembly has not considered dues and fees since 1993. Under Michigan Supreme Court rule, petitions to the Court for an increase in State Bar dues must be authorized by the Representative Assembly. Hearings will be held in Grand Rapids on January 30th, Gaylord February 1st, and Pontiac February 13. Hearings will also be held in Marquette and Detroit at dates to be determined.
