Bar Revamps Annual Meeting
3/25/03 Marking a change from previous years, the State Bar of Michigan's 68th Annual Meeting will be a shorter and leaner event. Approving a recommendation of the Annual Meeting Vision Committee, the State Bar Board of Commissioners voted in November to change the focus of the meeting to a one-and-one-half-day business format. Scheduled for September 11 and 12 in Lansing, the meeting has been scaled back from previous years. While core activities like meetings of the Board of Commissioners, the Representative Assembly and Section business meetings and programs will continue, the Board also approved a resolution that will allow sections the option of meeting at a separate time and/or place if they choose. Also, the Annual Meeting will no longer be rotated between Lansing, Detroit, and Grand Rapids, but will be held in Lansing indefinitely. Max Hoffman Jr., the chairperson of the Annual Meeting, attributed these changes to the State Bar's goal to fulfill its fundamental mission as envisioned in the Strategic Plan, in a cost-effective and fiscally responsible manner. "The new format will cut costs and help us achieve significant savings, while continuing an important service to our members," Hoffman said. As in previous years, fifty-year honorees will be honored during a Thursday evening reception on the 11th of September. On Friday, the 69th president of the State Bar, Scott S. Brinkmeyer, will be sworn in. During this luncheon program, awards will also be presented to outstanding members of the legal profession. A 5K walk and run, the Race for Justice, will be held in conjunction with the Annual Meeting on Saturday, September 13 at Potter Park in Lansing.
