Bar Annual Meeting Set for Sept. 11-12 at the Lansing Center
8/25/03 The State Bar of Michigan will hold its 68th Annual Meeting on Thursday and Friday, September 11-12, 2003, at the Lansing Center. Members of the legal profession will attend the event, which will include business meetings, section conferences, and other programs. There will be several highlights at this year's meeting. On Thursday evening, aided by the Young Lawyers Section, the State Bar will honor its 50-year members with a "Golden Celebration." During the celebration, donors to the Access to Justice Campaign and Fellows of the Michigan State Bar Foundation will also be recognized. At a luncheon on Friday afternoon, Scott S. Brinkmeyer, the 69th president of the State Bar, will be sworn in. In addition, the State Bar will also honor its outstanding members with several awards. The luncheon speaker, Honorable Maura D. Corrigan, Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, will make an "Address to the Profession." The Roberts P. Hudson Award, the organization's highest and most prestigious honor, will be given to George T. Roumell, Jr., the 51st president of the State Bar. The Champion of Justice Award will go to Robert E. Gilbert, Stephen R. Drew, and William M. Saxton. The Frank J. Kelley Distinguished Public Servant Award will be presented to Robert P. Griffin. The John W. Cummiskey Pro Bono Award will be presented to Nino E. Green. The Michael Frank Award will be presented to Justice Marilyn Kelly and Wallace D. Riley. The Liberty Bell Award, which is presented to a non-lawyer who has given his or her time to strengthen the effectiveness of the American system of freedom under law, will be presented to Wayne Bentley, a Grand Rapids City/Middle High School government teacher. A 5K Walk/Run, the Race for Justice, will be held in conjunction with the Annual Meeting on Saturday, September 13, 2003, at the Potter Park Zoo and River Trail in Lansing. Registration is at 8:00 a.m. and the Run/Walk begins at 9:00 a.m. The Young Lawyers section is sponsoring the Race for Justice, which supports the Access to Justice Fund for legal aid.
