"Dealing with the Media"

4/16/03

There was much lively discussion, many questions and thoughtful answers when journalists and lawyers met at a "Dealing with the Media" seminar at the Oakland County Bar Association in Bloomfield Hills, April 15, 2003. Panelists included prominent Michigan journalists and members of the legal profession. From left to right: Brian Dickerson, Detroit Free Press; Paul Egan, The Detroit News; Steve Huber, The Oakland Press; Thomas Byerley, director of professional standards, State Bar of Michigan and Judge Gene Schnelz of the Oakland County Circuit Court. About 40 lawyers took time away from their busy schedules to participate in the session, which was organized by the State Bar of Michigan's Law and the Media Committee chaired by Thomas Howlett. The seminar was moderated by James Mitzelfeld, assistant U.S. attorney, Eastern District of Michigan and by Thomas Howlett. The aim of the seminar was to enhance understanding of how the media covers the legal system and to help lawyers understand their role and the media's position better. <
