Granholm is Featured Speaker at Past President's Dinner to Benefit Access to Justice
October 10, 2003 Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm will be the special guest speaker at a dinner Thursday, October 16, to honor the State Bar's Immediate Past President Reginald M. Turner and to raise funds for Access to Justice (ATJ). This new event, which will take place at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit combines a Bar tradition of honoring its outgoing president with Turner's desire to focus attention on justice programs.
A reception will begin at 6:00 pm and dinner will follow at 7:00. A short program immediately after the dinner will recognize ATJ leaders and supporters, and will include a presentation to Michigan Supreme Court Justice Marilyn Kelly and Judge Harold Hood for their successful leadership of the Open Justice Commission. Since it began in 1998, the Access to Justice program has raised nearly $4 million in cash and pledges. "Reginald Turner will be remembered as a State Bar leader committed to the principle of assuring that justice is accessible to those in need who cannot afford it," said newly elected Bar President Scott S. Brinkmeyer. "It is a telling tribute to his commitment that Reg chose to forego a traditional dinner in his honor in order to focus our attention on the need for a fair and accessible justice system." Tickets for the dinner are $250, a portion of which is eligible for a charitable deduction through the Access to Justice Fund in support of civil legal aid services. Tribute greetings can be placed in a Dinner program to be distributed that evening and promoted throughout the next fundraising year. Names will be placed in the program for a charitable contribution of $100 - $1,000. Sponsorships and major charitable gifts are being solicited for the event, and major supporters are eligible to attend a private, pre-dinner reception with the Governor at 5:30 p.m. To purchase tickets for the Dinner, to place your name in the tribute program, or to find out more information about the event, please contact Lesa Smith at 1 (800) 968-1442 or (517) 346-6307 or email lsmith@mail.michbar.org.
