State Bar Launches Public Policy Resource Center

8/25/03

The State Bar of Michigan has developed a new public policy resource center that will enable its members to research key legislation and court rules online. To date, more than 1,600 bills of interest to lawyers have been organized by practice area, facilitating searches for specific legislation.

"Thousands of bills are introduced each legislative session," said Reginald M. Turner, president of the State Bar of Michigan. "We've organized them by practice area to help our members find the bills that most interest them. This is a wonderful new research tool that will help to empower our membership to work directly with the legislature. In addition, we list proposed amendments to the Michigan Court Rules and Administrative Actions by the Michigan Supreme Court."

The Resource Center, located in the Member Resources section of www.michbar.org under the Legislative Update heading, also provides access to a legislative and local government directory. Searches can be conducted by committee, leadership, or house or senate member name. Biographical information is available, as well as the ability to send e-mail directly to the representative or senator.

In addition to the online resource center, a listing of bills organized by practice area, court rules, and administrative orders will be published in the e-Journal each day. Members will also be able to subscribe through the website to a weekly e-mail newsletter that lists a summary of the bills and court rules posted online during the week, and provides links to relevant news articles.

"We are committed, as a part of our strategic plan, to helping our members at their desks," said John T. Berry, executive director of the State Bar of Michigan." The Public Policy Resource Center is just one of many new tools we will be bringing to our members to help make their jobs easier."
