Association of Legal Administrators Metro Detroit Chapter Names Winners of 2007 Diversity Scholarships
11/7/07 The Metropolitan Detroit Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators announced that it has awarded its annual diversity scholarships to Wayne State University Law School students Karissa M.W. Holmes, Terrence J.L. Thompson, Bernisha Van Horn. The scholarship is awarded on an annual basis to deserving Legal Administration or Juris Doctor candidates, and meets the Metro Detroit chapter’s organizational goals to increase awareness of, and sensitivity to, diversity within the chapter and in the legal management community in which our members work. The Association of Legal Administrators (ALA), an international organization of more than 10,000 members, defines diversity as “the differences — in effect, the diversities — among us which includes: race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability and cultural behaviors." The Metropolitan Detroit Chapter is committed to the goal of strengthening its diversity through education, increasing awareness of opportunities in the legal community for minorities, and recruiting and retaining minority attorneys and staff personnel from all backgrounds. A study done by ALA indicates the United States population is growing more diverse each year, changes that affect both the workforce and client base. Legal managers are committed to helping firms match the new workforce to this diverse population by recruiting and retaining diverse attorneys and staff. As a result of its efforts, the organization is committed to creating a workforce that can better serve a diverse client base.
