Clifford T. Flood Appointed State Bar General Counsel

The State Bar of Michigan Board of Commissioners recently appointed Clifford T. Flood as the organization's new general counsel. Flood, who has spent the past 18 months as the Bar's deputy general counsel, fills the vacancy left by Janet K. Welch, who was recently selected as the SBM executive director. In his new role, Flood will also provide legal advice to the Board of Commissioners and Representative Assembly.

Before joining the State Bar in January 2006, Flood was a partner with the law firm of Miller Canfield Paddock and Stone, PLC, where he spent 16 years. He has substantial experience representing corporations, institutions of higher learning, municipalities, and governmental authorities and has litigated in state and federal courts on a variety of issues, including contract, employment, personnel, and vendor matters. He has specialized knowledge in issues involving eminent domain, a topic on which he has presented many seminars and co-authored articles and treatises.

Flood is a former commissioner with the Michigan Supreme Court , and before that, was a law clerk at the Michigan Court of Appeals and clerked at the Genesee Circuit Court for the Honorable Robert M. Ransom. He has served on many local government bodies and commissions, including the Clinton County Board of Commissioners, the DeWitt City Council, and is currently a member of the DeWitt Public Schools Board of Education.

Flood received his undergraduate degree from Albion College in 1980 and his Juris Doctor from Wayne State University Law School in 1984. He and his family reside in DeWitt.
