State Bar of Michigan to Sponsor Law Day Broadcast

The State Bar of Michigan will sponsor the Michigan Talk Network's "Big Show" on Law Day, Tuesday, May 1, to help educate and inform listeners about important legal issues. This special edition of the show will be a live remote broadcast from the State Bar premises in Lansing.

Law Day, which was established by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1958, is a day set aside to celebrate the rule of law. It underscores how law and the legal process have contributed to the freedoms that all Americans share. This year's Law Day theme is "Liberty Under Law: Empowering Youth, Assuring Democracy."

"Lawyers belong to one of the few professions committed to performing public service," said Kimberly M. Cahill, president of the State Bar. "Whether it is keeping women and children safe in their homes, obtaining benefits for veterans, or protecting the elderly from scam artists, there's usually a lawyer involved."

The State Bar plans to highlight several programs during the broadcast to inform listeners of their legal rights, protect them from unlicensed practitioners, and assure equal justice for all regardless of income. Listeners can ask questions related to these matters on the air by calling 1-888-900-9966 between 9 and 10 a.m.

The Michigan Talk Network's "Big Show" originates from Lansing's WJIM-AM each weekday morning from 6 to 10 a.m. and is simulcast on 10 radio stations statewide. Host Michael Patrick Shiels was recently named Network Personality of the Year by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. The State Bar and Michigan Talk Network co-sponsor "Ask the Lawyer" every fourth Thursday of the month at 9 a.m. The May 1 Law Day broadcast will pre-empt the April 26 "Ask the Lawyer."

Also in conjunction with Law Day, the Michigan Lawyers Auxiliary and the State Bar will host a luncheon for Law Day essay award winners and their guests at the Michigan Hall of Justice in Lansing at 11:30 a.m. The luncheon will honor winners of a statewide Law Day essay contest from grades six, seven, and eight. The Hon. William C. Whitbeck, chief judge of the Michigan Court of Appeals, is the featured speaker. Other highlights include tours of the Hall of Justice Learning Center at 10:30 a.m. and the Capitol at 2:45 p.m.
