Free Training in Veterans Benefits Law Set for February 22

1/18/08

A free training session for attorneys interested in helping veterans with legal issues regarding disability and pension benefits is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 22 from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. at State Bar of Michigan headquarters in Lansing.

The seminar will cover the process for obtaining veterans benefits, explain the reasons many claims are denied, and discuss methods of appealing claim denials at the Board of Veterans Appeals and the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. Attorneys will also learn effective advocacy strategies in the Veterans Affairs system and be briefed on recent developments in the area of veterans law.

Continental breakfast and lunch are also included at no charge. In exchange for attending the free training, participating attorneys will be asked to accept at least one veterans law case on a pro bono basis. The event is sponsored by the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law Veterans Law Clinic and the State Bar of Michigan Pro Bono Initiative, with generous support and funding from the Michigan Legislature.

Attendance at the veterans law training is limited to the first 50 attorneys.
