Margaret Costello, a professor at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and SBM Commissioner, assigns cases to attorneys participating in last month's Veterans Disability Law Pro Bono Attorney Basic Training at State Bar of Michigan headquarters in Lansing. More than 50 attorneys, about half of them veterans, attended the seminar.

Participants in the Veterans Disability Law Pro Bono Attorney Basic Training study the cases they've been assigned. In exchange for the free training, participating attorneys were asked to accept at least one veterans' law case on a pro bono basis. The training was a collaborative effort of the University of Detroit School of Law Veterans Law Clinic, the State Bar of Michigan Pro Bono Initiative and the Michigan Legislature.
