Gobbo is the New SBM Representative Assembly Chair

Stephen J. Gobbo, of Lansing, has been sworn in as the chair of the State Bar of Michigan Representative Assembly for 2011-2012. The Hon. John M. Chmura officiated at the Sept. 15 ceremony, held during the SBM Annual Meeting at the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn.

The 150-member Representative Assembly (RA) is the final policy-making body of the State Bar. It was created in 1971 by the Michigan Supreme Court at the request of SBM's Board of Commissioners in order to increase geographical representation and member participation in SBM policy.

Mr. Gobbo was first elected to the RA in 2004 and he represents the 30th Circuit. He served as chair of the RA Special Issues Committee from 2007-2009 and Hearing Committee from 2006-2007, and was liaison to the Special Committee on Grievance that involved the operations of the Attorney Discipline Board, Attorney Grievance Commission, and Judicial Tenure Commission from 2005-2006. He was chair of SBM's Prisons and Corrections Section from 2002-2004 and chair of the Administrative and Regulatory Law Section from 2007-2008. He was recently selected as a fellow of the Michigan State Bar Foundation. He is also active at the American Bar Association, and has served on the governing council of the ABA Section of Criminal Justice.

Since March of 2008, Mr. Gobbo has served as director of the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs' Bureau of Commercial Services legal affairs division. He was designated state cemetery commissioner in June of 2008. Prior to working with the Bureau of Commercial Services, he served as administrative and chief financial officer for the Michigan Department of Corrections.

He graduated from Manhattan College in 1977 and received his master's degree in labor and industrial relations from New York Institute of Technology in 1990. He received his law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 1995. He is a member of the Connecticut, District of Columbia, New York, and Michigan bars.

Mr. Gobbo serves his local community as a member of the Dewitt Charter Township Planning Commission, and has volunteered at Habitat for Humanity and Legal Aid of Central Michigan. He received the Ingham County Bar Association's Pro Bono Legal Services Award in 1997 for his volunteer work on behalf of indigent clients.
