State Bar Welcomes New LJAP Director

Martha D. Burkett

The State Bar of Michigan has hired Martha D. Burkett to the position of Director - Lawyers & Judges Assistance Program (LJAP).

The LJAP directs programs for Michigan lawyers, judges, law students and their family members who are experiencing problems related to chemical dependency, depression, anxiety, stress or other life problems that bring about impairment.

As director, Burkett will report to LJAP Senior Director William E. Livingston, and will have the responsibilities of evaluating and referring people to the appropriate resources. She will also serve as staff liaison to the Lawyers and Judges Assistance Committee.

Before joining the State Bar, Burkett was a substance abuse therapist at the Longford Care Unit in Grand Rapids where she provided treatment and case management services for adults in both group and individual sessions.

Burkett holds a Level II Certification in Addictions Counseling, which she earned in November 1996. She has a B.A. in general university studies from Western Michigan University and is currently enrolled in the Master's of Public Administration and Holistic Health Care Certification programs at WMU.
