Access to Justice Campaign Appeal for
Hurricane Katrina Victims in Michigan

A special Access to Justice Campaign appeal has been established to respond to the legal needs of Hurricane Katrina victims housed in Michigan.

“Michigan’s lawyers have already responded generously to the calls for emergency relief aid,” said Nancy Diehl, President of the State Bar of Michigan. “In light of Governor Granholm’s announcement that the state is preparing to accept up to 10,000 evacuees, we feel a special responsibility to do more. Many will be arriving without money, identification, or any legal documents whatsoever. Their legal needs will be acute. Without special assistance, the state’s legal aid offices, already stretched to capacity, will be overwhelmed.”Contributions to the Access to Justice/Hurricane Katrina Appeal will be used in two ways: to help the legal aid programs in the communities housing evacuees respond to the increased workloads, and to train Michigan lawyers who have volunteered to help Hurricane Katrina victims in Michigan. The State Bar of Michigan’s Access to Justice Campaign has long been recognized as a national model for legal aid for the poor. The Access to Justice Fund is administered by the Michigan State Bar Foundation. Access to Justice contributions are received and managed according to the Access to Justice Fund guidelines.
