FOCUS: Law Day 2010
State Bar of Michigan officials will commemorate Law Day on Monday, May 3 with a two-hour broadcast on Michigan Talk Network’s “Michael Patrick Shiels in the Morning” and an essay awards luncheon at the Michigan Hall of Justice. The 2010 Law Day theme is “Law in the 21st Century: Enduring Traditions, Emerging Challenges.”

Agenda: HB 5699 Extend tolling of statute of limitations for civil action for damages resulting from criminal sexual conduct against a minor; HB 5521 Prohibit sexual penetration by medical care provider under certain circumstances and provide penalties; And any business properly before this committee.
SBM POSITION: The State Bar has previously opposed legislation similar to HB 5699 based on a concern that the length of time the statute of limitations is proposed to be extended, the due process rights of the defendant may be violated.
